History of Tremonton
The first settlers came to Tremonton area in 1888. However, it remained mostly uninhabited until about 1898 when land agents started promoting the Bear River Valley as a place for Midwestern farmers to relocate. That is when small groups from Nebraska and Illinois began to arrive.
The townsite of Tremonton was laid out early in Spring of 1903. Tremonton was originally named after the Illinois hometown of one of the German settlers. Tremont, Utah was frequently confused with Fremont, Utah. Therefore, after three or four years the postal authorities requested a name change for the newer town. Adding a simple "on" to the end, the town became Tremonton.
