Garland is a town located in the Bear River Valley in the eastern part of Box Elder County. Garland is surrounded by mountains on three sides and is situated on the east bank of the Malad River. Garland is 40.7 miles north of Ogden (40 minutes away) and 75.4 miles north of Salt Lake City (about 1 hour 10 minutes away via I-15).

Settlers looked to the Bear River as an important source of water. In 1889 John R Bothwell secured financing for a canal from Quaker societies in the British Isles. The contract to build the canal was given to William Garland. About seven thousand men worked on the project.
The availability of irrigation water has brought many people to Garland from other places in Utah.
The first school in Garland was built in 1898. Later, in 1921, Bear River High School was build at the southern edge of Garland to serve Garland and Tremonton.
The intersection of Main and Factory Street flourished after the construction of the Utah Sugar Company factory in 1903. The primary economic activity in Garland was the sugar factory and production of sugar beets until the factory closed in 1978.
